Police tried to pull over the driver of a Mercedes-Benz around 2 a.m. for a traffic violation, KTRK reported.

The driver, who had two female passengers in the vehicle, took off, prompting a chase with police that reached speeds of 100 mph, investigators said.

The driver, who has not been identified, cut through a parking lot in an attempt to avoid an officer. He veered back onto the road and crashed into the Cadillac, ripping it in two. The driver then started running from police. He was caught shortly later and taken into custody. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest.

“That’s why the (district attorney) accepted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon: speeding and disregarding the lights,” Houston police Sgt. David Rose told KTRK. “When you do that and strike somebody else, you can easily cause their death. Had it been a second before or a second after, (the victim) probably wouldn’t have gotten struck at all.”

The victim was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, KHOU reported. He is expected to survive.

Both passengers in the Mercedes suffered broken arms.
